Today I’m taking about Virtualbox software and using it to install other OS on top of Windows Vista. this can be use full for people who use deferent OS for testing and presontations. the best part is this is a Free software, given Free for personal usage. Virtualbox was originaly done by Innotek, a German software company and now Sun Microsystems devolop this as an Open Source project.

Virtualbox curruntly run on Windows, Linux, MAC OS and (Open)Solaris and you can install lot of Guest OS’s, here you will find the full list.

first you need to download Virtualbox. then you need to run the Virtualbox installer.

Click “Next”

Accept the terms, Click “Next”

select the Installation location and click “Next”

Click “Install”

Installing

when the Install is running, windows may prompt you for Driver installs, please click “Install”.

if all goes well installation will finish after some time, click “Finish”.

when you start Virtualbox for the first time,  you will be ask to enter the product registration infomation, full the nesesry infomation and click “Confirm”.

once Virtualbox started it will look as above.

OK, now I’m going to install Kubuntu 8.04 from a CD as a guest OS.

click “New” button from the virtual Virtual Machine main window, then New Virtual Machine Wizard will start and click “Next”

give a name for your Virtual Machine and select the “OS Type” you sill be Installing as a guest OS, in my case its Ubuntu (yes Kubuntu is Ubuntu) click “Next” to continue.

slect how much RAM your alocating for you guest OS and click “Next”

ok now you need to creat a Virtual HDD for your guest OS, click “New” to creat one.

The Create New Virtual Dish Wizard will start, click “Next”

Select Dynamically expanding image and click “Next”

Select the location and amount of space you alocate for your Guest OS Virtual HDD and click “Next” (you can select the location where the Virtual HDD file by clicking the folder icon)

click “Next”

OK the Virtual Machine setup is done, click “Finish”

now you will see the created Virtual Machine in the main Virtualbox window, click the CD/DVD ROM

when you click on the CD/DVD ROM you will get the settings windows, click Mount CD/DVD Drive and select your computer CD/DVD rom or you can slect an ISO image as the CD/DVD ROM for you Vertual Machine. same way you can setup Sound etc.

ok now put the OS instalation CD in to the ROM and click “Start” from the main Virtualbox tool bar.

the Virtual Machine will start, when you click on it you will see the above messages, first one is asking if its OK to captue the moue and keyboard inputs, and secound one is showing the option to move out and in to the Virtual Machine, by defult is the right side “Ctrl” key

here’s how the booting Virtual Machine will look like.

now from the Virtual Machine menu, Machine –> Full Screen Mode, you can have the virtual machine run in Full Screen, the message indicate to come back to or go the to Full Screen you can click Host+F (host key is the right “Ctrl” key os Ctrl + F) and to get the menu bar you can click the Host+home

ok your done, just install the OS as your normaly do :)
